Firing at SSB camp in Ramban, one jawan killed, another injured

JAMMU: A head constable of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) was killed in a suspected fratricida­l firing and another jawan was injured in Banihal area of Ramban district on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, on Wednesday.

The incident took place at around 7:15 pm. The police are investigat­ing the cause of the firing, senior superinten­dent of police (SSP), Ramban, Mohan Lal told PTI.

“An SSB head constable suffered a fatal casualty in the brief firing while another jawan lost his jaw bone due to an attack by some blunt object,” Lal said.

The deceased received one gun shot and his body was removed to the hospital for postmortem, officials said, adding the injured jawan was also evacuated to a hospital for treatment.

“It is premature to say anything about the incident right now. We are ascertaini­ng the details,” the SSP said, while not ruling out either a militant attack or fratricide.

The jawans were manning a post outside an 8.5 km-long under-constructi­on tunnel connecting­Banihaltow­nofRamban district in Jammu province with Kulgam district’s Qazigund, the gateway to the Kashmir valley.

The slain head constable was identified as Ramparvesh Yadav and injured ASI as Sham Lal

SOLDIER KILLED IN CEASEFIRE VIOLATION

SRINAGAR : An army jawan was killed in a ceasefire violation by Pakistan along the LoC in Keran sector of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district, officials said on Wednesday. A police spokespers­on in Srinagar confirmed the death, but did not identify the slain soldier.

A police official told Hindustan Times that the army man was injured in the ceasefire violation in the morning. “He was rushed to hospital but died on way,” he said.
