KEY CLASHES

-

Hosts India go into the first Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka at Cuttack as firm favourites, having beaten their opponents in both the Tests and ODIs. The first match on Wednesday could be decided by a few duels. Here’s a look at those that may shape the result of the game.

ROHIT SHARMA VS DASUN SHANAKA

Fresh from yet another double century in ODIs, the right-handed opener will play a key role for the hosts. It will require something special from the Sri Lankans to stop him. Medium-pacer Dasun Shanaka, who was one of the architects of Sri Lanka’s surprise T20 win over India last year at Pune, will have to produce a magical spell once again.

UPUL THARANGA VS JASPRIT BUMRAH

The Sri Lanka batsman was the lone ranger for his team in the last ODI, having given Sri Lanka a fine start with a 95. He will have to do the same thing. Importantly, he will have to ensure that he stays till the end and give Sri Lanka a sizeable total. In the last ODI, the start given by him was frittered away. Onus will be on paceman Jaspit Bumrah to get him early.

ANGELO MATHEWS VS YUZVENDRA CHAHAL

Leggie Chahal has proved to be India’s trump-card over the past few months with his ability to pick wickets. The way he tamed Glenn Maxwell earlier in the season showed his skills. Among Sri Lankans, only Angelo Mathews seems to use his feet effectively against spinners and he may have to apply himself to negate Chahal.
