Man, wanted in 17 cases, killed in police encounter

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old man wanted in over 17 criminal cases in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhan­d died after getting shot during in exchange of fire between him and the police on Saturday night.

Police claimed Shamim was injured after police shot him in self- defence when he opened fire at them in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarna­gar district. A constable too got injured in the incident. Both were taken to a hospital, where Shamim was declared brought dead. The team comprised Delhi police’s Special Cell, UP’s Special Operation Group, and the state’s local police.

DCP (special cell) PS Kushwaha claimed Shamim and his associate were spotted in a car around 10.50pm on Saturday asked to surrender. But the two men opened fire on the police, claimed Kushwaha.

“In self-defense, the police team also fired back. During the exchange of fire, Shamim was shot. A constable sustained injuries as well. Shamim’s associate managed to escape taking advantage of the darkness. Shamim and the constable were taken to a hospital where Shamim was declared brought dead. The constable is under treatment,” DCP Kushwaha said.

According to the police, for the last 14 years Shamim was wanted in cases of robbery, attempt to murder, assault, dacoity and criminal intimidati­on.

In September 2016, Shamim along with his associates were involved in a ~40 lakh robbery in Daryaganj, central Delhi

A reward of ~50,000 was declared from Delhi Police. He was also having a reward of Rs. 50,000 from UP Police in 2 criminal cases, police said.

Shamim and his family lived in Uttar Pradesh, police said. Initially he committed small thefts but, later he made a gang and started committing daylight robberies. He was arrested for the first time in 2007 in five cases of theft, robbery, arms Act and attempt to murder.
