Pak defends presence of Hafiz Saeed at rally

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has def ended Mumbai terror attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed’s participat­ion in a pro-Palestine rally, saying the JuD chief’s UN proscripti­on does not place any restrictio­ns on his freedom of expression.

Sae ed and Palestinia­n envoy to Pakistan Walid Abu Ali participat­ed in a rally in Rawalpindi on Saturday. ndia took strong exception to Ali sharing the stage with Saeed and issued a strong demarche to Palestine, which conveyed “deep regrets” and decided to recall the ambassador.

Pakistan’s foreign office said the country’s steadfast support for Palestine was well known and several rallies were held since the US announced it would re cog ni se Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

“This public rally was attended by thousands of people from all walks of life. More than 50 speakers addressed the rally, including Hafiz Saeed. Contrary to the impression being created, UN proscripti­on does not place any restrictio­ns on the freedom of expression,” the statement said.

“The people and Government of Pakistan respect the Palestinia­n Ambassador’s active participat­ion in events organised to express solidarity with the people of Palestine,” it said. AGENCIES
