PHAGWARA::A 30-year-old former panchayat member went live on Facebook announcing that he would commit suicide and had shot himself dead in his house at Chachoki village near Phagwara town even as his friends in the comments section kept urging him not to take the extreme step.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening.

The victim, Sandeep Singh alias Sandy, a Youth Congress worker, used his licensed revolver to end his life. His friends and neighbours rushed to his house but he was dead by the time they reached there.

The incident came to light on Wednesday after his video went viral on social media.

Police said that Sandy’s mother lives with his brother Gurdeep Singh in Canada and he lived alone here. His father is no more.

His brother Gurdeep came to India a few days back and was not home at the time of the incident.

In the video, Sandeep is seen reiterating that he is going to commit suicide and claiming that no one is responsible for the suicide. He also gave milk to his pet before shooting himself. His Facebbok page remained open for nearly an hour.

Sub-inspector Mukhtiar Singh, the investigating officer, said Sandeep was depressed for the past few days but the exact reason of his ending his life was not known.

A case under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC) has been registered.
