FORM NATIONAL POLICY ON DRUG CONTROL: CAPT TO RAJNATH
LISTS A SERIES OF MEASURES TO BE TAKEN BY THE CENTRE TO REINFORCE THE STATE IN FIGHTING DRUG MENACE
CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh has written to Union home minister Rajnath Singh urging him to evolve a national policy for the prevention and control of drug abuse with a coordinated strategy to check the smuggling of narcotics into the state.
In his letter, the chief minister has listed a series of measures to be taken by the Centre to reinforce the state’s efforts in fighting the drug menace, which he observed “was seriously impairing the future of our generation”.
“While the state government is determined not to let this happen, we need full and active support from the central government in formulating and pursuing effective measures,” the chief minister said.
Captain has urged the home ministry to ensure effective check by the BSF on smuggling of drugs from across the border, restrictions on farming of drugproducing plants in neighbouring states and formulation of a national policy.
“Punjab Police have seized huge quantities of heroin and other narcotics smuggled from across the international borders,” Captain said, adding that “the intelligence gathered by us in this regard is shared with the BSF regularly”.
