ROHTAK : A high-voltage drama ensued at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) on Wednesday night after Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the only party contesting the student union polls, lost the top post to an independent candidate.

Soon after the results were announced, making Yashika of MA first-year student of zoology department the president, the ABVP created ruckus and demanded recounting of the votes.

The authorities gave in to the demand of the BJP-supported party and recounted the votes, but it further embarrassed ABVP as its candidate lost one more vote from its kitty in the recounting.

The winning candidate too lost two votes, but still won against ABVP’s candidate by one vote. Three votes were cancelled in recounting due to more than one ticks on ballot papers.

Meanwhile, the student polls showed women power in Rohtak where out of 15 posts of presidents in colleges and universities, 13 were bagged by women and only two could be won by men.

ABVP suffered more shocks after final counting as 11 presidents in 15 colleges were independent and only four ABVP candidates could win the top post.

The party in its defense alleged that other student unions who had announced to boycott the polls secretly fielded candidates as independents.

Earlier, all major student unions, including Congressbacked NSUI and INLD-backed INSO, announced that they were not going to contest the ‘indirect elections’ and demanded the government to hold direct polls like they happen in other prominent universities.
