Man posing as I-T inspector booked

-

GURUGRAM: Police booked an unknown person on Wednesday for allegedly posing as an income tax (I-T) inspector and trying to extort money from two men, partners in a company in IMT-Manesar, to put on hold an impending raid by the I-T department on their firm.

Police said that they have received multiple complaints from companies in Manesar about callers using similar modus operandi to con them.

“This seems to be the handiwork of a gang. Police is collecting details of the suspect by tracing the bank account information mentioned in the complaint and taking assistance of the cyber cell to trace the suspect through the cellphone and SIM used,” Manesar station house officer (SHO) Dinesh Kumar said.

The incident took place on Tuesday around 9.30am when one of the partners, Rajeev Kumar, received a phone call from a man who introduced himself as Ajay Kumar, an I-T inspector, and told him that the department would be raiding their premises later in the day. In response, Kumar told the suspected imposter that he oversees the technical work and that administrative work was looked after by his partner, Kumar stated in his complaint to the police.

The complaint stated that within 30 minutes of the first call, his partner Yashpal Bhutani was contacted by the suspect. The suspect told Bhutani that if he paid ₹2.5 lakh, he would ensure that the I-T raid does not happen.

Manesar SHO said the partners suspected the call to be fraudulent and called the caller’s bluff on the phone.
