Cops have man­aged to keep gang­sters in check: New DGP

AM­RIT­SAR : A day after as­sum­ing charge of di­rec­tor gen­eral of po­lice (DGP), Pun­jab, Dinkar Gupta on Satur­day said the Pun­jab Po­lice have been suc­cess­ful in check­ing gansters to much ex­tent, as very few gang­sters are ac­tive in the state now.

Sur­rounded by his fam­ily mem­bers, he paid obei­sance at the Golden Tem­ple, holi­est Sikh shrine. “I have come here to seek bless­ings of the Guru and pray for peace, broth­er­hood and pros­per­ity of Pun­jab. I wish Pun­jab re­mains pro­gres­sive,” he said after pay­ing the re­spect.

Re­ply­ing to a query re­gard­ing the con­cern of gang­sters, Gupta said suc­cess rate of the op­er­a­tions launched by Pun­jab Po­lice to counter the gang­sters is very high. So far, the po­lice have neu­tralised many dan­ger­ous gang­sters, he said.

To pre­vent sac­ri­lege of Guru Granth Sahib and holy scrip­tures of other re­li­gions, he said, mea­sures are be­ing taken to en­hance safety of the wor­ship places with the co­op­er­a­tion of the Shi­ro­mani Gur­d­wara Par­band­hak Com­mit­tee (SGPC) like re­li­gious bod­ies. He said the po­lice were mulling to pre­pare a data­base of re­li­gious places.

Re­spond­ing to a query on grow­ing in­ci­dents of snatch­ing and other crimes against the tourists in the holy city, the DGP said, “Noth­ing is more im­por­tant for us than ad­dress­ing this prob­lem. We are also in­tro­duc­ing tourism po­lice for the safety of the tourists, given the tem­ple is the largest Sikh shrine and Am­rit­sar, an in­ter­na­tional city”.

Speak­ing on the is­sue of drugs, he said they have bro­ken the chain of drug smug­glers and re­duced sup­ply of drugs.
