CHANDIGARH: Chief minister Amarinder Singh dubbed the protest by “Akalis and a handful of farmers” on the opening day of the budget session a petty political stunt which was executed keeping in mind the upcoming polls.

“Our government has already helped 5.83 lakh farmers with its debt relief scheme and will soon cover all 10.25 lakh small and marginal farmers,” he said.

The Akalis failed to do anything for the farmers during their 10-year tenure and are now resorting to all kinds of cheap tactics in a bid to mislead the farmers. The SAD and other opposition parties should play a constructive role in the interests of the people of Punjab,” he added.

Responding to a question, Amarinder said action against the Behbal Kalan firing culprits would depend on the probe of the special investigation team (SIT). “Whoever is found guilty will be punished as per the law,” he said.

On the Ludhiana rape case, he said police were investigating the matter and some suspects were detained.
