Gangster jumps off roof to escape during raid, dies
KARNAL : A 30-year-old wanted criminal died while trying to evade arrest by jumping off the roof of a house in Punjabi colony of Samalkha town in Panipat in a bid to escape the police during a surprise raid.
As per the information, the deceased, Mahesh Kumar, a resident of Prahladpur of Delhi, was wanted in several criminal cases and the Delhi police had also announced ₹2 lakh reward on him. Police got information about his presence in Panipat after the arrest of gangster Deepak from Delhi on Monday.
Deepak told the police that Mahesh alias Thekdar along with Vijay and Surender were having a birthday party for their friend Sawan at his house in Punjabi colony.
Based on the tip-off, police conducted a raid at the spot.
On seeing the police, Mahesh, who was under the influence of liquor, allegedly jumped off the roof and fell on a bike.
He died on the spot but his friend Sawan managed to escape, police said.
When contacted, Samalkha DSP Vijender Singh said they had got information from the Delhi police that Mahesh had died after jumping from the roof during a police a raid.
“We have sent the body to Panipat civil hospital for post-mortem,” he added.
