Gangster jumps off roof to escape during raid, dies

KARNAL : A 30-year-old wanted criminal died while trying to evade arrest by jumping off the roof of a house in Punjabi colony of Samalkha town in Panipat in a bid to escape the police during a surprise raid.

As per the informatio­n, the deceased, Mahesh Kumar, a resident of Prahladpur of Delhi, was wanted in several criminal cases and the Delhi police had also announced ₹2 lakh reward on him. Police got informatio­n about his presence in Panipat after the arrest of gangster Deepak from Delhi on Monday.

Deepak told the police that Mahesh alias Thekdar along with Vijay and Surender were having a birthday party for their friend Sawan at his house in Punjabi colony.

Based on the tip-off, police conducted a raid at the spot.

On seeing the police, Mahesh, who was under the influence of liquor, allegedly jumped off the roof and fell on a bike.

He died on the spot but his friend Sawan managed to escape, police said.

When contacted, Samalkha DSP Vijender Singh said they had got informatio­n from the Delhi police that Mahesh had died after jumping from the roof during a police a raid.

“We have sent the body to Panipat civil hospital for post-mortem,” he added.
