THE VAR IMPACT

Real Madrid heaved a sigh of relief when Nicolas Tagliafico’s goal was overruled by Video Assistant Referee (VAR), introduced in the Champions League for the first time from the knockout stage. The officials decided that forward Tadic was marginally offside and interfering with play — standing in front of Thibaut Courtois at the exact moment Tagliafico got his header in. It was the correct decision technically, however without VAR the goal would have stood.
