Undertrial escapes from Amritsar hospital

AMRITSAR:Charanjit Singh Channi of Kular village, undertrial at Kapurthala Central Jail, escaped by dodging three wardens from Guru Nanak Dev Hospital (GNDH) on Sunday.

Channi is an accused in theft case and was admitted at the hospital for the treatment of tuberculos­is (TB). Police said Channi was being guarded by head warden Jarnail Singh along with wardens Balkar Singh and Amarjit Singh of Kapurthala jail. Three have been booked after Channi managed to flee.

The case has been registered on the complaint of assistant superinten­dent of Kapurthala Central Jail Sardara Singh. He said, “On Sunday, Channi escaped from the hospital by dodging our three wardens who were deployed to guard him.”

ASI Harpal Singh of Majitha Road police post said, “A case under Sections 223 (escape from confinemen­t or custody negligentl­y suffered by public servant) and 224 (resistance or obstructio­n by a person to his lawful apprehensi­on) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against Channi and the three wardens.”

“Efforts are being made to arrest Channi. The three wardens will also be arrested soon,” he added.
