GNDU student hangs self in hostel room
Police seal the room, question other students
AMRITSAR :A 22-year-old student of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) has allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his hostel room in the university, here on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Prabal Kumar, second year student of M.Sc Microbiology and a resident of Hoshiarpur.
Giving details, assistant commissioner of police (ACP-West), Dev Dutt, said, “We got a call from the hostel incharge reporting suicide at 2 PM. The incident came to light when Prabal’s classmates visited the hostel to call him for a lecture. When the students saw the door of his room locked, they peeped through the window and found him hanging from a fan. They broke the window glass and tried to rescue him, but he was dead by that time. The students informed the hostel incharge and university authorities about the incident.”
Dutt added, “Prabal’s two roommates had gone home on Saturday evening. Police have sealed the room and questioned hostel students. It was revealed

that Prabal was suffering from depression. However, since the police have not recovered any suicide note from his room, the reason behind the suicide is not clear. We have informed the family of the deceased and once they share more information about him, the reason behind suicide could be ascertained.”
“We have initiated an inquest proceeding under section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC),” said Dev Dutt.
