CHANDIGARH: The state government on Saturday announced to appoint legendary cricketer Kapil Dev as the first chancellor of the upcoming Haryana Sports University at Rai in Sonepat district.
The announcement of the appointment of Kapil, who captained India’s 1983 cricket World Cup-winning team, was made by state youth and sports minister Anil Vij through a tweet.
Kapil, who hails from the state, was also known as ‘Haryana Hurricane’. The state assembly in its session last month passed a bill to create the state’s first sports university at Rai. “So far, a sports school is functional at Rai,’’ Vij said, adding other staff members will be appointed later.
“The sports university bill has a provision that the government can appoint the first chancellor and vice-chancellor. The government has also written to the President for his approval,’’ the minister said.
Whether the government has communicated with Kapil Dev in this regard, Vij said he and chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar have spoken to the veteran cricketer. “Kapil Dev has agreed to be the chancellor,’’ Vij added.
The university will conduct programmes in physical education, sports technology, sports medicine, sports management, sports infrastructure engineering, sports psychology, sports nutrition, sports journalism, and sports marketing.
It will be the third varsity set up by a state government in the country after the Swarnim Gujarat Sports University at Gandhinagar and Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University at Chennai.
The Centre had given a go-ahead last year to set up country’s first national sports university in Imphal (Manipur).
