JAMMU : Lieutenant governor of the newly created Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Girish Chandra Murmu, on Monday inspected the guard of honour at the civil secretariat here, as the darbar move offices re-opened in the winter capital for the next six months.

The bi-annual shift is the first after the state’s bifurcation into two UTs—Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, which came into existence on October 31.The secretariat and other government offices closed in Srinagar on October 25-26 after functioning there for six months. The other offices which resumed functioning here include Raj Bhavan and the police headquarters.

Police and paramilitary forces were deployed in strength in the city, especially on the roads leading to the civil secretariat as part of security measures to ensure the smooth functioning of the administration from Jammu.

After inspecting the guard of honour given to him by a police contingent , Murmu met administrative secretaries and other top officials of various departments.

However, he skipped the customary press conference which was a usual practice by the head of the administration in the erstwhile state and instead straightway went inside the secretariat to embark on his official work.

He also interacted with all officials of the civil secretariat and sought their suggestions for improving the quality and pace of work. The officials were also advised to keep public welfare as a central motto while discharging their duties.

DGP Dilbag Singh and other senior police officers interacted with Murmu and briefed him about the law and order situation and multiple challenges before the J&K police.

The lieutenant governor has also ordered a fire safety audit of all hotels across the UT. The administration has worked out a strategy aimed at fire risk assessment, identifying fire hazards, determining fire safety and control measures and having in place evacuation plan/ procedures in hotels to tackle any emergent situation/crisis.

As part of the strategy, a fire safety audit of all hotels across J&K will be conducted by a fivemember team of officers to be constituted by the divisional administrations.

The team will submit fire safety details to the respective divisional commissioners by November 9.
