COMPENSATE FARMERS ADEQUATELY

Apropos the news item ‘Take stern action against errant farmers’ (November 5), the Haryana government’s order to register FIRs against farmers indulging in burning of crop residue has come as a bolt from the blue for the farming community. The government needs to identify the real cause behind the much vexed issue. Hapless farmers who are already in debt due to hefty farm loans have no option but to burn their crop waste as the compensation being paid to them is inadequate. Keeping this in mind, the government should compensate them adequately and offer them machinery at easy instalments . Ramesh K Dhiman,
