KARNAL: A 24-year-old man was allegedly shot dead by three unknown assailants in Maingra village of Kaithal district on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Prince Verma, a resident of Bhagal of Kaithal. He is survived by his wife, Sunita, and two daughters, one of who is 15 days old. As per information, three men, with their faces covered, reached his shop in the afternoon and opened fire at him. One of the bullets hit his head, killing him on the spot.

Family members allege Sunita’s relatives were behind the murder. In the complaint, they stated that Prince had married Sunita around three years ago. As it was an inter-caste marriage, Sunita’s family members were not happy with the marriage. On their complaint, police have booked seven persons, identified as Gurdip Singh, Jony, Balram, Kala, Gurdeep, Praveen Kaur and Bimla Devi, under Section 302 (murder), 120 B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code and Section 25 of the Arms Act.

Talking to HT, Cheeka police station incharge Narender Singh, however, ruled out the possibility of honour killing as the marriage took place three years ago. “But we are probing the matter from all angles. No arrests have been made yet but the body has been handed over to family members after post-mortem.”
