NHRC team visits Jamia Millia as protests continue

NEW DELHI: Even as hundreds of protesters continued to gather around Jamia Millia Islamia on Friday, a team from the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Friday inspected the central library, following Sunday’s alleged police crackdown.

“A seven-member team headed by senior superinten­dent of police (SSP), investigat­ion, Manzil Saini visited the campus on Friday. They inspected the library and enquired about the incident on December 15,” the NHRC’s media coordinato­r Ahmad Azeem said.

The commission said it had received multiple complaints. “The fact-finding team will submit its report, which will be analysed and placed before the commission for appropriat­e recommenda­tions. The complaints received in the commission include allegation­s of illegal detention of Jamia students by the police and denial of legal and medical access to injured students in the police action,” NHRC said in a statement.

Jamia registrar AP Siddiqui also wrote to the NHRC chairperso­n on Friday, asking it to investigat­e “police brutality and unlawful entry” on campus on Sunday.

“Delhi Police entered the campus through gate numbers 4 and 7 (on Sunday) by breaking the lock and beating the guards on duty, lobbed the tear gas shell inside reading room and forcefully entered inside and beat all students studying inside the library brutally and also while taking them out,” the letter read.retch on both sides.
