THE MAN CONSUMED POISON FEARING SOCIAL EMBARRASSMENT AFTER LEARNING THAT AN FIR WAS REGISTERED AGAINST HIM

GURUGRAM: Booked for raping an 18-year-old woman, a man allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison in Pataudi on Tuesday. The police said the man consumed poison fearing social embarrassment after learning that an FIR had been registered against him.

According to the police, the incident was reported around 3.30pm when the woman, a second-year college student, was working on a farm in her village in Pataudi. The police said the suspect, also from the same village, took her to an isolated spot on the farm and allegedly raped her before running away.

A police official privy to the investigation, requesting anonymity, said that after the incident, the suspected man’s mother and elder brother assaulted her and threatened her. Police said the woman returned to her house and shared her ordeal with her mother, who took her to the police station in Pataudi and filed a police complaint.

A case was registered against the suspect under sections 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 376 (rape), 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code(IPC) and relevant sections of the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Act at the Pataudi police station on Tuesday.

Suresh Kumar, station house officer (SHO), Pataudi police station, said that after hearing that a case had been registered against him, the man consumed a poisonous substance. “He was rushed to a private hospital in Manesar, where he died during the course of the treatment. No suicide note was found and his family has not filed any complaint against any person,” said SHO Kumar.

The police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. His body was handed over to the family after an autopsy on Wednesday, said the police.
