Srinagar mayor may survive no confidence motion
SRINAGAR: Srinagar mayor Junaid Azim Mattu may survive no confidence motion resolution as 11 corporators have submitted another letter with the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) conveying that they never signed the letter seeking removal of mayor.
On Monday, a group of independent corporators supported by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had moved a no confidence motion against the mayor.
Secretary, SMC, Mudasir Banday confirmed that he received a letter with 40 signatures seeking no confidence motion against the mayor.
“After some time, another letter was submitted with us in which 11 corporators whose signatures were included in the first letter conveyed us that their signatures were never meant for removal of the mayor.”
Last week, BJP leaders had said that they are weighing options to remove city mayor Junaid Mattu and his deputy Sheikh Imran by bringing no confidence motion against them. Congress and the Peoples’ Conference, which are the largest parties in the corporation, had termed the claim as ‘day dreaming’.
The no confidence motion against Mattu was moved by independent corporator from Ikrajpora, Ghulam Nabi Bhat, and seconded by three city corporators.
THE SITUATION ARISES AFTER 11 CORPORATORS SAY THEIR SIGNATURES WERE NEVER MEANT FOR REMOVAL OF MAYOR
“Yes we also heard that some corporators are now saying that signatures are forged. We are open for FSL probe to ascertain truth behind signatures,” said Ghulam Nabi Bhat, who had moved the no confidence motion. Corporator from Lal Chowk, Wajahat Hussain, said that the mayor has to go. “We are waiting for the floor test to prove our majority.”
Firdous Hassan, advisor to SMC mayor, said that every member has a right to move no confidence motion.
“They (corporators) produced a letter with 40 signatures. Now 11 corporators are saying that they were never in favour of no confidence motion and support Junaid Azim Mattu as city mayor. They lack the numbers,” he said.
