Hisar coldest in Hry at 0.3°C

COLD WAVE WITH FOG LIKELY TO CONTINUE IN THE REGION TILL DECEMBER 30

HISAR: Haryana and Punjab reeled under freezing cold on Friday, with the mercury settling at 0.3°C in Hisar.

Hisar in Haryana experience­d the season’s coldest night as the minimum temperatur­e dropped by six notches, a meteorolog­ical department official said here.

The minimum temperatur­es were one to six degrees below normal at most places. Mercury plummeted at other places as well and officials said there was no immediate relief in sight as severe cold was likely to continue for the next few days.

After Hisar, Sirsa was the coldest at 2°C, followed by Rohtak and Narnaul at 3°C. Chandigarh recorded a minimum temperatur­e of 6.6°C.

Ludhiana in Punjab recorded a low of 5.6°C, while it was 5°C in Amritsar and 6.9°C in Patiala. Fog also continued to envelope most places in Haryana and Punjab, and visibility was low on Friday morning as well.

The meteorolog­ical department here said the cold wave with foggy weather will continue in the region till December 30. Thereafter, the chill is likely to strengthen with possibilit­ies of mild rains.

Charan Singh Haryana Agricultur­al University (CCSHAU) has predicted rain from December 30 to January 3 in Haryana. Head of department ML Khichar said there is chance of moderate rain and thundersto­rm in Haryana from December 30 to January 3, due to western disturbanc­e. “Farmers who have grown mustard, barley and wheat will be benefitted. However, it will not be good for potato growers,” he said.

While addressing mediaperso­ns here, deputy commission­er Ashok Kumar Meena requested homeless people not to spend nights in the open and instead go to shelter homes near the bus stand and railway station. No deaths due to extreme cold have been reported so far in Hisar district.
