Pak pushes to take child rapists to task

-

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s parliament on Friday approved a resolution that called for the public hanging for child rapists with a majority of votes, condemning the killing and sexual abuse of a minor in Nowshera.

“This house demands that to stop these shameful and brutal killings of children and give a strong deterrent effect, the killers and rapists should not only be given death penalty by hanging but they should be hanged publicly,” the resolution said.

Minister of state for parliamentary affairs Ali Mohammad

Khan tabled the resolution.

The handwritten resolution, which demanded the death punishment and public hanging for culprits of sexual abuse of minors, referred to the “brutal killing of 8-year-old Iwaz Noor in Nowshera”.

The opposition Pakistan Peoples Party objected to the resolution, with PPP senior leader Raja Pervez Ashraf saying that under the rights set forth by the UN, culprits cannot be hanged publicly. The minister for human rights Shireen Mazari also spoke out against the resolution. HTC
