Don’t mislead, share plan to tide over power crisis

-

The recent assertions of Harpal Singh Cheema, Punjab’s leader of opposition and Aam Aadmi Party, on costly power pacts don’t hold much water when confronted with facts. He says the cost of power is high in Punjab due to power purchase agreements. However, a scrutiny of the 2021-22 tariff order issued by the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC) shows that the state buys power from all sources at an average cost of ₹4.54 a unit and supplies the same at an average cost of ₹6.5 a unit on which a 20% tax is imposed by the state government. Instead of misleading people, political leaders should come up with their plans to bring down the cost of power in Punjab.
