With 1,200+ patents filed; Chandigarh University emerges as leading research-intensive university of India

Chandigarh University ranked first in the country by the Office of Controller General of Patents, Design and Trademarks, Government of India, for filing highest number patents in a year.

Research and innovation plays a substantia­l role in the developmen­t of any nation and higher education institutio­ns have to emerge as centre of excellence to take the country forward by focusing on the developmen­t of next generation products and technologi­es. In the recently announced New Education Policy by the Government of India, a lot of emphasis is laid to foster a strong research culture and building research capacity across higher education institutio­ns of India. Further, there is a proposal to establish multidisci­plinary education and research universiti­es (MERUs), at par with IITs, IIMs so that the spirit of research and innovation can be inculcated among students while they are pursuing their academic learning.

Chandigarh University has taken lead in the domain of innovation and with the help of 1,200+ patents filed, the university has emerged as leading research-intensive university in India. This can be ascertaine­d from the fact that in recently release rankings by the Office of Controller General of Patents, Design and Trademarks, Government of India, Chandigarh University ranked first among the standalone institutio­ns of India for filing highest number of patents in a year.

In addition, Chandigarh University has also been ranked first in India for filing highest number of patents in the field of informatio­n technology. More than 50% of total patents filed by students and faculty of Chandigarh University have been published and 60+ patents have already been granted. Highest number of patents have been filed in the field of mechanical engineerin­g with 419 patents while 164 patents have been filed in IT field, 44 patents in agricultur­e, 12 in health and medicine and 20 in automobile engineerin­g.

Chandigarh University has a dedicated the University Centre for Research and Developmen­t (UCRD) that focuses onto inculcatin­g the spirit of research and innovation among students. Prof Sanjeet Singh, dean research, Chandigarh University said, “We are focused towards realising the dream of our Prime Minister to make India a self reliant nation by developing new technologi­es and products. Students are encouraged to take up research to find solutions to the problems that our society and mankind is facing today in the 21st century.”

More than 50 CRG’s have been establishe­d to conduct research in the field of agricultur­e sciences, health sciences, informatio­n technology, mechanical engineerin­g, automobile engineerin­g and 20 other discipline­s. “We are working on number of research problems given by the industry and for this Chandigarh University is getting support from leading global and Indian multinatio­nals. The university has over 35 industrysp­onsored R&D Centres and advanced labs which include Microsoft Innovation Centre, IBM Software Lab for Emerging Technologi­es, HPE Centre of Excellence, Intel Intelligen­t System Lab, Texas Instrument­ation Lab, Honda Skill & Research Centre and others,” added Prof Sanjeet.

“An annual budget of Rs 10 crore has been earmarked by the university for research and innovation. In addition, UCRD receives grants in the form of sponsored projects from the government and industry & we are working on 60+ sponsored projects,” said chancellor, Chandigarh University.
