Govt plans to install CCTVS at bus depots

CHANDIGARH: In order to improve security and track unlawful activities, the Haryana government has decided to install close circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all state transport depots and major bus stands in the state.

Arun Kumar, director general, state transport, told Hindustan Times on Sunday that the department had decided to bring all 90 state bus stands, including 22 bus depots, under CCTV surveillance.

“The government will invite bids from reputed companies for installing the CCTV system,” he said.

While the tender document for inviting bids is in final stages of vetting, the department plans to install the CCTV cameras in half-a-dozen major bus depots in the next four-five months and then bring the other bus stands under e-surveillance. The bids are decided by the high-powered purchase committee.

“The cameras will be fitted at spots such as urinals, ticket and inquiry counters, eating joints, but their number will depend on the requirement and inputs received from the law and order agencies. The advanced security system will be a big deterrent,” a department official said.

The law and order agencies have also written to the department to install the CCTV system at its depots to keep an eye on anti-social elements entering the bus stands.

Similarly, the department has also decided to install CCTV cameras in the 200-odd buses run by the Haryana Roadways in the NCR (National Capital Region) towns of Gurgaon and Faridabad in wake of the gangrape and brutal assault of a girl in a bus in Delhi a few months ago.

Similarly, the 50-odd AC buses, for which the order was placed in December, will come with in-built CCTV cameras and be operated in Gurgaon.
