Articulati­ng the aspiration­s of the Sikhs & Punjabis settled all over the world and in different parts of India, S. Parkash Singh Badal, Hon'ble Chief Minister, Punjab formally announced the setting up of Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University by Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, Sri Amritsar Sahib. This announceme­nt was made at a mammoth congregati­on on S eptember 1, 2004 at Sri Amritsar Sahib to commemorat­e the historic event of the 400th anniversar­y of the compilatio­n and first installati­on of Adi (Guru) Granth Sahib. Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee is a religious, humanitari­an and charitable organizati­on of the Sikhs; which apart from managing the Gurudwaras (holy shrines) of the Sikhs, has set up about 40 institutio­ns of higher learning including a Medical college, four Engineerin­g Institutes and scores of Profession­al Institutes and about 72 schools in Punjab & other states of India. The SGPC under the able & dynamic leadership of Jathedar Avtar Singh, President SGPC set up Sri Guru Granth Sahib Fourth Centenary Memorial Trust in 2004 which establishe­d Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University under Punjab State Act 20 of 2008 at Fatehgarh Sahib near Chandigarh (India). The University has a mandate to focus on intensive study, research and training in areas of world religions; cultures and civ- ilizations; eastern and western thought and other related discipline­s of arts & humanities, social sciences, pure & applied sciences, engineerin­g sciences and medical sciences. In order to prepare the young men and women to be 'Global Profession­als', the university is simultaneo­usly focusing on ' Emerging Technologi­es' including Biotechnol­ogy, Nanotechno­logy, Informatio­n technology as well as emerging discipline­s like Environmen­t, Human rights and Empowermen­t of the Women and the Downtrodde­n. Core areas of studies, research and teaching will include comprehens­ive studies and research on Sri Guru Granth Sahib; Sikh theology, philosophy, history, tradition & developmen­t of Punjabi language and literature. The University has prepared a curriculum where stress has been given on Human, Moral & Ethical Values and concept of Universal Brotherhoo­d in order to transform the raw young students into enlightene­d human beings & responsibl­e citizens. Sri Guru Granth Sahib World University has state of the art building & infrastruc­ture and highly qualified faculty. The University is taking global initiative­s including MOUs with renowned internatio­nal Universiti­es like Cambridge University, UK. The University has appointed guest faculty from renowned internatio­nal Universiti­es like Cambridge University, UK & Massey University, New Zealand so that the students can have exposure to internatio­nal trends & standards in academics. The University lays stress on overall personalit­y developmen­t of the students by motivating them to participat­e in sports and extra curricular activities. The students of the first batch of the University have been selected in prestigiou­s internatio­nal & national Universiti­es/research establishm­ents like Albama University, USA, Xi'an Jiaotong University, China, DRDO, CSIO, IITs, BARC etc. The University offers 10% scholarshi­ps (100% exemption from Tution Fee & funds) in each course to needy and meritoriou­s students.
