AMRITSAR: With Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh still in a critical condition in Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital, his family paid obeisance at Nankana Sahib ( Pakistan) on Monday and prayed for his long life.

Talking to HT on the phone from Lahore, Sarabjit’s sister Dalbir Kaur said, “Now, we have pinned all our hopes on God. There is no improvement in his condition and a lot of time is being wasted by not taking him abroad for better treatment.”

She asked, “If Taliban attack victim Malala Yousafzai can be sent abroad for treatment, then why not Sarabjit? Just because he is an Indian?”

Dalbir said her brother had gone through a lot, while appealing to Pakistan to release him.

Sarabjit’s lawyer Awais Sheikh, who accompanied the prisoner’s family, said, “Uskee

halat to waisi hi hai jaisi thi (His condition is no better). We are all praying for him.”

Sheikh, who was not allowed to meet Sarabjit, has been fighting for his freedom since long despite facing stiff resistance in his country.

Talking to HT, Sarabjit’s elder daughter Swapandeep said, “We feel it is God who can help us now. Many people are praying for my father.”

Sarabjit has been in “deep coma” after being attacked by six inmates in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail on April 26.

PRAYERS IN VILLAGE

Prayers were held in Sarabjit’s native village Bhikhiwind in Amritsar district on Monday. People assembled in temples and gurdwaras throughout the day to pray for his long life.

Village resident Inder Mohan said, “For the past two decades, we have been waiting for Sarabjit. Reports coming from across the border are scaring us.” Villagers are planning to visit the Golden Temple on Tuesday.
