Delhi Police help turns snatcher into singer
NEW DELHI: A couple of years ago, 21-year-old Rajesh Kumar (name changed) had been arrested by Delhi Police for being involved in a case of snatching.
Around 24 months of reformation later, Rajesh is a changed man, thanks mainly to Delhi Police’s initiative of rehabilitating first-time offenders.
So much so, that his dream of becoming a singer may also come true as a private FM channel has offered to train him and help him in achieving his dream.
In the first week of June, southeast district police had convened a meeting with 109 people involved in cases of snatching, burglary and robbery in the area. Rajesh was one of them. He told senior officers at the meeting about his interest in singing.
“I was hesitant in attending the meeting initially as I thought that the police will arrest me again. A few days after the meeting, I got a call from an FM channel, who were ready to help me in achieving my dream. I went to their office, where they took my audition. Now they have decided to provide me training,” Kumar said.
“I was arrested along with some my friends and that incident definitely changed my life completely. It’s been two years but I am unable to forget the incident. I changed two jobs in between but nothing helped. However, I hope that now I will be able to leave my past behind,” he added.
In the meeting with first-time offenders, issues related to the rise in number of crimes by youths and drug de-addiction were discussed. “It was a step towards forging a way which might open up avenues to the people marginalised by the society due to their involvement in crime and encouraging them to believe that they could turn over a new leaf and return to the mainstream,” said Ajay Chaudhry, additional CP (southeast).
