CHANDIGARH: A delegation of the opposition Congress on Sunday urged governor Kaptan Singh Solanki not to deliver the ceremonial address on the opening day of the budget session of the state assembly on Monday.

The Congress delegation, in a memorandum to the governor, requested him to fulfil his constitutional and moral obligations by not delivering the address prepared by the “failed” BJP government that had “lost the right” to govern the state.

“The resolution passed by the Punjab assembly with regard to the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal land should be rejected to avoid constitutional crisis,” it urged the governor, who holds the dual charge of Punjab too.

Haryana Congress leaders indicated that if the governor delivers the address, the opposition Congress may boycott it. The delegation included Haryana Congress chief Ashok Tanwar, Congress Legislature Party leader Kiran Choudhry, former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Rajya Sabha MP Selja, former ministers Geeta Bhukkal and Karan Singh Dalal and former speaker Kuldeep Sharma.

“As the governor of Punjab, you delivered the address that was against the interests of Haryana. The move of the Punjab assembly to de-notify the land acquired for SYL is unconstitutional and all of it happened in your presence,” reads the memorandum that urged Solanki to safeguard the interests of Haryana.

The party leaders also reiterated their demand for dismissal of the BJP government and imposition of President’s rule in the state.
