Books can give us strength, guidance and delight
Self- help and spiritual books can give us the delight and strength to face difficulties in life, and help us find solutions to our problems.
Robin Sharma’s The Greatness Guide mentions some things which enabled him to function in his best capacities. He says we can spend one hour every morning on self-development. He reads inspirational books and writes in a journal at this time.
Journal writing develops selfawareness. It is an excellent practice to write a few pages daily. He goes to the gym five times a week.
He has a world-class diet. A spiritual person can take simple vegetarian food, including milk and fruits.
He reads something daily and tries to have at least one conversation with an interesting person every week. When we get an opportunity, we can put questions to a person who is accomplished in some way, and try to learn from her. He also lays stress on listening.
A spiritually inclined person may also include some of the following items omitted by Sharma: A need to control desire, avoid talking too much, meditate, do some work, and avoid sleeping too much in the daytime, alcohol and tobacco.
Another great self- help book is Dale Carnegie’s How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. In one chapter, Carnegie says that we should live in ‘ day- tight compartments’, implying that we should live one day at a time, trying not to have regrets about our past or fears about the future. He also says that when we are worried, we can write down the answers to two questions: What am I worried about? What can I do about it? Once the problem is defined we know how we will tackle it.
