Badal takes all parties to guv, finds SYL Bill not with him
CHANDIGARH: Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Tuesday led an all-party delegation of the state legislators to Punjab and Haryana governor Kaptan Singh Solanki to seek his consent to the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal Land (transfer of propriety rights) Bill passed in the assembly on Monday.
Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, leader of opposition Charanjit Singh Channi of the Congress, and state BJP legislature party leader Madan Mohan Mittal conveyed to the governor that Punjab had no water to spare for any other state and so the draft legislation be given assent. Channi says he was taken aback when the governor himself told him he was yet to see the legislation.
STILL WITH LEGAL REMEMBRANCER
The draft legislation was forwarded to the state legal remembrance (LR) on Tuesday. The LR will now forward it to the governor. The Congress leaders lamented that the all-party delegation to the governor meant little when the document was not yet in his office.
State parliamentary affairs minister Mittal stated the Bill would be sent to the governor within a day or two and the delegation had requested the governor to approve it then.
On Tuesday, the Punjab cabinet also hailed the Bill, resolving that the state had no water to spare for any other state.
