Bank of Maharashtra, one of India’s oldest public sector banks (PSBs), will recruit more than 1,300 people in the junior and mid-level categories in the current fiscal. The move comes at a time when PSBs have been struggling with growing amount of bad loan on their books.

Bank of Maharashtra has a network of 1,900 branches across India and a customer base of 2.38 billion.

The recruitment of 1,315 candidates will be for various cadres including clerks, probationary officers at junior manager (scale-I), manager (scale-II) and senior manager (scale-III).

India Post Payments Bank recently declared its hiring plans for its proposed 650 branches across India. After a similar move by the Bank of Maharashtra, there is likely to be a rush for the posts. Outgoing RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, who pushed for the formation of payments banks and small finance banks, recently said that public sector bank executives in India were overpaid at the bottom, compared to their private peers.

Besides, Bank of Maharashtra will also hire 300 clerks — 200 with agricultural and 100 with legal background, and around 15 security officers at the scale-II level with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the armed forces. For clerks, there will be a training programme of 6 months, while for junior managers , the tenure will be for a year.

“We want people to go through the training programme before they start working with us so that they are well-equipped and skilled, which we believe will help them adapt quickly,” said Manoj Biswal, general manager, HR management.

Candidates will have to apply online, after which selected candidates will be called for interviews.
