LAX COPS TO BLAME FOR RAPES

-

The Chandigarh police are facing criticism for not taking adequate steps to curb incidents of rape and stalking. CCTV cameras installed at the traffic interjections and in neighbourhood are of poor quality. Besides, CCTVs in places like Traffic Park are non-functional. The recent rape incident in the Sector 23 park occurred right under the nose of the city police. The police must devote their time to prevent such horrific crimes instead of harassing motorists.

It is very sad to know that a Class-8 girl was raped in a supposedly safe city like Chandigarh. It shows how women in India are not safe. It’s high time the government changes the laws relating to rapes. We need to have stringent punishment and fast track courts to monitor these cases so that the offender thinks twice before committing the crime. Not only law but men have to change their mindset. Women must learn the techniques of self-defence. Therefore, the government should designate self-defence as a main subject in schools.

Almost every day, rape cases make headlines in newspapers and TV channels. We don’t even pay considerable attention to it. In India, a woman is raped every 25 minutes. As the country is heading rapidly towards globalization and westernization, the frequency of such crimes is rising. Over the last two years, 7,87,000 women fell victims to rape or sexual assault. It clearly shows that our social system is headed towards destruction. Our younger generation needs to be taught moral and social values which are almost negligible in our prevailing education system. Mouli Sharma
