CHANDIGARH: To mark the 33rd death anniversary of India’s first woman Prime Minister Indira Gandhi that falls on October 30, members of the Punjab Youth Congress will install her statue at the Congress Bhawan in Ludhiana on Monday. Prior to the installation, at least 1,500 workers will take out a rally in the city.

While addressing mediapersons on Friday, PYC secretary Vijay Agnihotri said that the country remembered Indira as the Iron lady. “She (Indira Gandhi) has worked immensely for the poor, farmers, downtrodden and the marginalised which is the reason that she continues to live in the memories of millions even 33 years after her demise,” he said.

Rajya Sabha member Anand Sharma, Rahul Gandhi’s close associate Kishori Lal Sharma, Senior Congress leader and former All-India Congress Committee general secretary Oscar Fernandes, Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee’s president and Gurdaspur MP Sunil Jakhar are expected to join the rally.

Hitting out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJP-led government at the centre, Agnihotri said, “The BJP government calls itself as the saviour of Hindus, yet it has failed to heal the wounds of Hindu families who suffered in the 1984 riots. There are 35,000 Hindu families in Punjab whose voice has not been heard and they have not got any compensation. We will highlight their plight through our rally.”
