PATIALA: Leader of opposition in the Punjab assembly Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Friday accused chief minister (CM) Captain Amarinder Singh of sheltering former cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia in the drug scam and his colleague Rana Gurjit Singh in the multi-crore sand mine auctions scam.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader said the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Congress leaders are hand in glove in corruption and other ‘misdeeds’ in the state.

He said the CM is saying that he has no proof to act against Majithia.

“But, from where proof will come if no one is inquiring charges against Majithia? Proof and witnesses come only when you order an inquiry. Give me a day and I will submit hundreds of proofs of involvement of Akalis in the drug trade. What action have you taken in the sand mining scam, for which I have submitted proofs?”, said Khaira.

Khaira was speaking during the AAP protest in front of the office of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) against the recent power tariff hike.

The AAP leadership termed the hike unprecedented and unjust and said that it will burden the public to the tune of ₹2,500 crore.

Khaira asked the Congress government to fulfill its poll promise of reviewing the power purchase agreements (PPAs) with private thermal power plants.

He alleged that like the former deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal, the present power minister Rana Gurjit Singh has also started taking a ‘cut’ from private thermal plants, so he is not reviewing the PPAs.

He said that the PSPCL has suffered huge losses because former chairman KD Chaudhry had given undue favours to the Akalis.

Sangrur member of Parliament (MP) and AAP’s state president Bhagwant Mann said that the government had promised hike in old age and widow pensions and Shagun scheme, but instead of doing that it has hiked power tariff by 12%.

He said the Amrinder Sigh -led Congress government in Punjab has lost popularity in just seven months of its rule.

Prof Baljinder Kaur, Aman Arora, Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer and other MLAs were also present at the protest.
