36 booked, 11 held for murder bid on duty magistrate

TARN TARAN : The Sarai Amanat Khan police of the district have booked 36 persons — 11 by name— under attempt to murder case, for allegedly making an assault on a duty magistrate and a police party in Kasel village, 30 km from the district headquarte­rs, on Thursday evening.

The 11 accused were identified as Amanpreet Singh, Satnam Singh, Major Singh, Tehal Singh, Rashpal Singh, Navdeep Singh, Rajwinder Kaur, Harjit Kaur, Nirmaljit Kaur, Paramjit Kaur of the same village and Didar Singh of Chhina Bidhi Chand village. All of them have been arrested.

The case was registered on the complaint of ‘Kanungo’ (a revenue officer) Sawinder Singh of Chabhal. While laying his charges, Sawinder said a team of revenue officers, including a duty magistrate (Nayab Tehsildar) Jagmohan Singh, and cops reached the village on the directions of the additional civil senior magistrate, Sucheta Aasish, for vacating encroached part of a land; around 89 kanals.

“When we tried to vacate the land from the control of the accused, they disrupted our duty and started arguing with the police team,” he added.

He said, “The mob also attacked the team and after that the duty magistrate ordered a cane charge to disburse them.”

Sub-inspector (SI) of the police station confirmed the team did not receive any injury in the scuffle.

He said, “The mob tried to make an assault on the duty magistrate.”

“A case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 186 (obstructin­g public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidati­on), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecutio­n of common object) of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered against the accused,” he said. “Till now, we have arrested the identified accused and the absconders will also be arrested soon,” he added.
