7 of family killed in crash on new KGP e-way in Palwal

NEW DELHI: Seven members of a family, who were on their way to Mathura from Punjab, died in an accident in Palwal when the pick-up truck they were travelling in turned turtle at the recently inaugurate­d Kundlighaz­iabad-pawal (KGP) Expressway on Tuesday morning.

Police said the sequence of events leading to the accident were unclear because the driver, in his statement, said he had fallen asleep behind the wheel and awakened when their vehicle “collided” with an unidentifi­ed vehicle. The accident took place at around 4am on Tuesday on the expressway near Sujwari village in Palwal.

“The impact of the accident was such that our control room van, which was on the patrolling duty nearby heard the sound and rushed to the spot,” a police official said. All the victims were rushed to a government hospital where seven were declared brought dead, while others were referred to different hospitals.

An investigat­ing officer said that 16 persons from the same family were on their way to Mathura from Mohali, Punjab. The deceased have been identified as Vijaypal (55), Devi Singh (53), Vijaypal (47), Omwati (46), Jatin (16), Seema (15) and Ananya (4).

The seven are from Nangla Shyam village in Mathura.

“Five people are admitted in Safdarjung hospital, Delhi and two people in K.D Hospital in Mathura,” SP Palwal Waseem Akram said.

“In all, 17 persons were on board this ill-fated vehicle. The 14 people from a single family were travelling in the cargo bay and three members, including the driver, his wife and one-andhalf-month-old child were in the cabin,” a police officer said. The driver’s family received minor injuries. The bodies were handed over to the family after post-mortem on Tuesday evening. “We will record statement of the survivors and accordingl­y decide if an FIR needs to be registered in this case,” SHO Chandhut police station Shahid said.

“We have already intensifie­d patrol duty on this road”, SP Palwal Waseem Akram said.last month, three engineers were killed when a dumper hit their car, parked on the Expressway.
