Court directs Farooq Abdullah to appear before it on Aug 29
SRINAGAR: A J&K court on Saturday rejected the National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah’s plea seeking exemption from personal appearance in the multi-crore scam in the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA) and asked the former chief minister to appear before it on the next hearing – August 29.
The NC president had sought exemption and bail in the case and had moved an application through his counsel.
“In view of what has been stated herein above, and having regards to the judgement supra, the applicant/accused be produced by learned counsel for the application for admitting the accused to bail and thereafter the application for exemption will be taken up for consideration,” read the order issued by chief judicial magistrate, Srinagar, Aijaz Ahmad Khan.
The multi-crore scam involved payment of more than ₹112 crore by the Board of Control for Cricket of India (BCCI) to the state cricket board between 2002 and 2011 and the subsequent misappropriation of funds.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had on Monday filed a chargesheet against Farooq Abdullah, who was the then president of JKCA, two former members of the association and a former executive of J&K Bank before a Srinagar court for alleged irregularities and misappropriation of funds in the JKCA.
The high-profile case was initially being probed by a special investigative team (SIT), but the J&K High Court, for transparency, in 2015 handed this case to the CBI.
