Scrutiny of papers: 7 nomination­s rejected, 27 in fray

KARNAL : : Of the 34 nomination papers received by the election commission for the Jind bypoll slated for January 28, as many as seven were rejected during scrutiny of papers on Friday. While giving informatio­n, an official spokespers­on of the election commission said that Saurabh Bhagat, the general observer for the election, monitored the scrutiny of nomination­s in the presence Jind SDM and returning officer Virender Sehrawat.

The candidates whose nomination­s were cancelled include Satender Singh Dhull, the covering candidate of INLD’S Umedh Singh Redhu, Anil Kumar, Sukhbir Singh, Charan Singh, Ankur Sharma and Sandeep Kumar and Vidyavati, the wife of former MLA late Harichand Midha whose death necessitat­e the bypoll. Vidyavati was the covering candidate of BJP’S Krishan Mida.

After scrutiny of papers, 27 candidates are left in the fray for the elections. January 14 would be last day for the withdrawal of nomination­s. The polling would be held on January 28. The general observer said that this is for the first time in Haryana that Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines will be used in bypolls.

CAMPAIGN BEGINS

A day after the process of filing of nomination papers was completed, candidates started canvassing in Jind. The candidates and their teams have started camping in Jind and set up their war rooms.
