Three arrested in Jalandhar firing

POLICE ARRESTED MAIN ACCUSED GOPI BAJWA WITH A PISTOL AND 3 CARTRIDGES ON THURSDAY

JALANDHAR: The commission­erate police on Friday arrested three more persons in connection with the shootout at a shop in Shastri market, near Ladowali Road in the district. Police have recovered 7.65mm country-made pistol used in the crime and 5 live cartridges from their possession.

Earlier, on Thursday, police have arrested the main accused Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi Bajwa, 24, in the case, in which a person had died while his younger brother had sustained serious injuries during the shootout.

Those arrested on Friday have been identified as Sukhwinder Pal Singh alias Goldy, 32, of New Guru Amardass Nagar, Vikas Kalyan alias Nannu, 28, of New Sant Nagar and Abhinandan Sharma alias Nandu, 30, of Basti Guza locality here.

Goldy and Nannu were arrested from their hideout in Delhi, while Nandu has been held near Wadala Chowk, here.

A case under Sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 324 (voluntaril­y causing hurt by dangerous weapons),148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 109 (punishment of abetment if the act abetted is committed in consequenc­e), 120 (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 25, 27 of the Arms Act has been registered against them.

Commission­er of police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, said remaining accused will also be nabbed soon. “We have recovered both weapons used in the crime,” the CP said.

Police said that Goldy is a drug addict and a proclaimed offender, and was wanted by police in several cases, including one for robbery in Amritsar while Nandu was a close aide of gangster Daljeet Bhana. Goldy was also involved in an assault on one Shashi Sharma, a property dealer, at his shop near bus stand on November 27, police said.

During the investigat­ion, it was revealed that prime accused Gopi Bajwa was supplied weapon by Sukhwinder Pal Singh alias Goldy, a notorious criminal, Bhullar said.

He said that all three are history-sheeters and have several cases pending against them for attempt to murder, robbery and others.

Earlier, on Tuesday evening, a group of people had opened fire at one Davinder Singh alias Rinku and his brother Kamaldeep Singh alias Babbu at their shop. While Davinder died on the spot, his younger brother was undergoing treatment at a private hospital here. Following this, city police on Wednesday registered a case against 11 people.
