KAPURTHALA: A 31-year-old financier was burnt to death under suspicious circumstances here on Sunday night.

Police said Vishal Sharma, 31, a resident of Baba Deep Singh Nagar locality, was allegedly found lying with severe burn injuries on the Kala Sanghian road on the outskirts of the city around 10 pm on Sunday. His burnt motorcycle was lying by his side.

Local residents rushed him to the Kapurthala civil hospital with 80% burn injuries. He was later referred to a private hospital in Jalandhar where he succumbed to his injuries late in the night.

In a statement to the police, Vishal’s father Ashok Kumar said the victim had gone out of their house on his bike at 8 pm and his mobile phone went out of reach after an hour. They later came to know that he had landed in the hospital with severe burn injuries.

Deputy superintendent of police (Dsp-investigation) Harinder Singh Gill said a case has been registered against unknown persons under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including 302 (murder).

The DSP said the victim’s father suspects that his son has been killed by someone who might have taken loan from him and did not want to repay it.

“We are scanning the CCTV footage available from the area and call details of the deceased’s mobile phone to get some clues,” he said.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Satinder Singh said the motive of the crime is not clear yet. “Investigations are on and we have launched a manhunt to nab the killers.”
