After meeting CM, Ajnala MLA begins canvassing for Aujla

AMRITSAR: THREE days after Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh held a meeting with party leaders, including Congress MLA from Ajnala, Harpartap Singh Ajnala, who had opposed ticket to Gurjit Singh Aujla, the Congress legislator began canvassing for party’s Lok Sabha candidate from Amritsar segment Aujla.

During the meeting, Captain had tried to bury the differences that had cropped up due to the party’s decision to field Aujla, who is also sitting Member of Parliament (mp), from the Amritsar parliamentary seat.

Apart from Ajnala, Punjab revenue minister and Rajasansi MLA Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and Attari MLA Tarsem Singh DC had also raised objection on party’s pick for the constituency. They had pitched former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s name for the seat.

Even as the party gave the ticket to Aujla, who had defeated BJP’S Rajinder Mohan Singh Chhina in 2017 bypoll, a section of the Congress leaders, including the three legislators, had refused to support Aujla.

On last Saturday, Captian held a meeting with all of them in presence of Aujla at Sarkaria’s residence and reportedly pacified them.

Meanwhile, Ajnala organised gathering of the party rank at a marriage palace in Ajnala on Tuesday and urged them to respect the decision of the party. However, he did not glorify Aujla and asked the workers to support the party in the Lok Sabha polls slated on May 19 in Punjab.

Ajnala’s son Kanwarpartap Singh said zila prishad members, block samiti members, sarpanches and panches were among those attended the meeting and vowed to work in favour of the party. He said they are committed soldier of the party and his father has asked them to ensure big lead for Aujla in Ajnala.
