NEW DELHI: A 40-year-old woman suffered multiple injuries on Tuesday morning after her saree got stuck in a Metro train door at Moti Nagar Station of the network’s Blue Line.

The woman, Geeta Gola, was dragged for a few metres before she hit her head on a pole at the end of the platform. Eyewitnesses said that the train was stopped when other passengers alerted the driver and he applied the emergency brakes.

Gola was travelling from Najafgarh to her house in Shastri Nagar with her daughter.

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) in a statement said that at around 9.19am, Gola’s saree got stuck in the Metro train door while she was alighting.

“The train operator immediately applied the emergency brake and stopped the train. The station controller also rushed to the incident site and the woman was rescued and rushed to a nearby hospital,” the statement read.

The Metro also said that an inquiry has been initiated to look into the details of the incident.

“Appropriate action will be taken if any lapses are found,” the statement added.

The woman’s husband, Jagdish Gola, said he got a call from his daughter who asked him to rush to Acharya Shree Bhikshu Hospital, where her mother had been admitted. “I reached the hospital and saw my wife was undergoing treatment. She has sustained multiple injuries in her head and legs. She was later discharged from the hospital,” said Jagdish, who runs a business of packing material.

Hindustan Times reporter Namita Singh who was in the same coach as Geeta said she saw the woman getting dragged till the end of the platform.

“The Metro coach was crowded. The doors closed when the woman was getting off the compartment and her saree got stuck between the doors. As soon as the woman realised what had happened, the Metro started moving. She tried to pull the saree but fell on the platform. As the train gained speed, the woman was dragged until she hit the end of the platform,” she said.

Some passengers hit the emergency button and alerted the driver. Emergency brakes were applied and the train halted between Moti Nagar and Kirti Nagar stations,” Singh said.

She said that the train was halted between the two stations for about 15 minutes.

“Everyone feared that she had come under the train. Some passengers had started screaming and crying,” the woman added.

A senior CISF officer said that their CCTV observer also spotted the incident at Moti Nagar station and rushed a team to the spot.
