CHANDIGARH: Former deputy speaker of Punjab Vidhan Sabha Bir Devinder Singh will be visiting Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo, to meet Kashmiri students on Tuesday.

On Sunday, he had highlighted the plight of these students, who have been unable to contact their families since August 5. He had also appealed to the acting jathedar of the Akal Takht to send help to these students.

“It’s reprehensible that over 35 Kashmiri students, including several girls, have had no contact with their families back home for more than a month. Now, these students are staring at a a slew of fresh problems. They have no money, can’t pay their fees and have no one to turn to,” Bir Devinder said.

He said that most students had not been able to pay their canteen dues and if nothing was done, soon they would not have enough to eat.

He added, “I spoke to Bathinda deputy commissioner B Srinivasan to do the needful and I appreciate that he has responded positively. I have been receiving a number of distress calls from students, seeking help.”

AKAL TAKHT JATHEDAR TAKES NOTE OF STUDENTS’ PLIGHT

He added that even the acting Akal Takht jathedar had reached out to him, telling him that he (the jathedar) had taken note of the condition of Kashmiri students at the varsity.

“There should have been no difficulty for these students to talk to their parents, if telecommunication lines are indeed functional in the Valley. Justice should not only be done, it must also appear to have been done,” Bir Devinder added.
