JALANDHAR: Two days after a Ferozepur village sarpanch was arrested with 1kg heroin, police on Wednesday claimed to have busted the supply line of narcotics and weapons from across the border by arresting a man.

Police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said police have arrested a drug peddler – Makhan Singh of Gatti Mattar village in Ferozepur – and seized 1kg heroin, a 30-bore pistol and 30 cartridges. The contraband, weapon and cartridges were delivered to Makhan allegedly by Pakistan-based drug suppliers, who are yet to be identified as they were in contact with Makhan’s son Charanjeet Singh or Channa.

Father of a son and five daughters, Makhan owns four acres of land in Ferozepur of which six kanals are along the India-pakistan international border. Along with farming, Makhan earned his livelihood by driving the tractor of village sarpanch Jagroop Singh.

Makhan told the police that he and his son Channa came in contact with Pakistan-based drug peddlers five months ago. They were using a Pakistani mobile phone SIM card sent by peddlers for better co-ordination.

Bhullar said the accused was booked under sections of the NDPS and Arms Acts and will be taken on police remand to know the exact quantity of drugs or weapons supplied from across the border and his links in the state.
