LUCKNOW: Opposition Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday hit out at the Uttar Pradesh government over Kamlesh Tiwari’s murder.

In a tweet, Priyanka Gandhi accused the government of failing “absolutely” in controlling crime. She tweeted headlines of murders, including that of a Meerut lawyer, and an alleged custodial death in Hapur.

Yadav tweeted after Tiwari’s family met chief minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow and said that the latter should also meet the kin of those killed in Kannauj, Prayagraj, Jhansi, and Meerut. He said all those killed were victims of the state’s poor law and order.

Uttar Pradesh’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party spokesman Manish Dixit said that instead of connecting with the people, who have voted them out repeatedly, the opposition leaders are doing politics on social media. “They are using [social media] to make baseless allegations against the government that the people have reposed their faith in. Healthy opposition is required in a democracy. But it seems these parties have lost the plot completely.”

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Ajay Kumar and Congress Legislative Party (CLP) leader Aradhana Mishra visited the Tiwari’s family in Sitapur late on Sunday evening and assured the family that the Congress will fight on streets and in the assembly till the family gets justice.
