INDIA NOW AMONG 10 WORST-HIT

As India on Sunday overtook Iran to become the country with the 10th highest number of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in the world, we take a look at where the country stands in comparison to other nations ravaged by the virus.

1WORLD’S 10TH BIGGEST HOT SPOT

If we compare the outbreak in the 10 worst-hit countries from the day they reported their 100th confirmed case, we see that India’s growth rate has been much ‘flatter’ than others. India’s trajectory has not shown any sign of slowing down; it appears to be tracking that of Brazil’s – the country with the world’s second highest number of cases. India’s current cases (over 138,000) are where Brazil was around 15 days ago. This means that unless India's rate of increase of cases sees a drop, we may be on the same trajectory as Brazil – reporting an average of 15,000 new cases daily. This rise of cases is also reflected if we look at India’s doubling rate of around 13 days, which means that assuming the trajectory does not drop, we may be looking at around 270,000 total cases in about 13 days.

2 BETTER MORTALITY RATE THAN OTHERS

This is one metric where India appears to have an edge over other nations. Only Russia has fared better than India, both in terms of case fatality rate (CFR) and total number of deaths. Turkey’s CFR is only slightly better than India’s. Countries such as France, Italy and UK have a CFR is nearly five times worse than India.

3 DAILY DEATHS STILL RISING

Much like the previous charts, India shows a far more gradual rate of increase compared to the other nations in terms of deaths reported daily. Here, we have compared the average daily deaths reported from the day the nation reported five deaths. While European nations such as Spain, Italy, France and the UK reported 900 or 1,000 deaths a day, they have all managed to bring their numbers down in the last few weeks. The US reported as many as 2,200 daily deaths and has since managed to bring it down to 1,200. The only three nations currently seeing rising number of daily deaths are Brazil, Russia and India.

4 RISING CASES IN THREE NATIONS

In the past few weeks, three nations — Brazil, Russia and India — have been pushing the number of daily new cases reported in the world. More than 32% of new cases reported in the last week have come from these three nations. They were reporting 12% of the cases a month ago, and just 2.3% of cases two months ago.
