NEW DELHI: Kapil Dev is stable and recovering in a Delhi hospital after undergoing an angioplasty procedure early on Friday morning. Dev, 62, was admitted to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute at 1 am on Friday with complaints of chest pain.

He underwent an emergency angioplasty, a non-invasive procedure to open up vessels of the heart.

The legendary 1983 World Cup winning captain is currently admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital for close monitoring, under interventional cardiologist and head of the department of cardiology at the hospital, Dr Atul Mathur.

“Kapil Dev suffered a heart attack. He was evaluated and an emergency coronary angioplasty was performed in the middle of night,” the hospital said in an

updated health bulletin after only mentioning chest pain in its initial statement.

“He does not have a history of heart disease and hasn’t had such interventions in the past. He has diabetes,” a hospital personnel said.

Dev is likely to be discharged from the hospital within a couple of days, according to the hospital statement. “Fortunately, he was taken to the hospital in time after complaining of uneasiness,” Madan Lal, his team mate from the 1983 triumph, said. “I am happy that he will be home soon. All I will say is, lots of good health and strength to Kaps.”

“I was campaigning in Darbhanga, when I heard about Kapil’s health. We have a 1983 Whatsapp group, where our team mate Madan Lal posted that he was now recovering. That’s when one was able to breathe easy again,” said 1983 team mate turned politician Kirti Azad.

Karsan Ghavri, who shared the new ball with Dev in 25 Tests, called him “a warrior”. “I am sure he will come through a winner,” he said.

Prayers and good wishes poured in on social media. “Take care @therealkapildev! Praying for your quick recovery. Get well soon Paaji. Folded hands,” tweeted Sachin Tendulkar, who played with Dev, and led India when Dev was the coach.
