WITH 3,477 NEW CASES, PUNJAB RECORDS BIGGEST DAILY SPIKE
The biggest singleday spike comes at a time when the Centre has warned the state over lack of Covid-appropriate behaviour

Punjab on Monday witnessed highest ever single-day surge of 3,477 Covid-19 cases with 52 people losing their lives due to the virus.
The earlier single day hike was on April 9 when the state had witnessed 3,459 infections. This is the seventh consecutive day when the state witnessed more than 3,000 cases in a day.
The death of 52 people took the toll to 7,559 in the state, the bulletin stated. The number of active cases is 27,866.

Eight people each died in Amritsar and Hoshiarpur and five each in Gurdaspur, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and Patiala, among the fresh Covid-linked fatalities.
Mohali saw the highest of 662 infections, followed by 523 in Ludhiana, 366 in Jalandhar, 305 in Amritsar and 281 in Patiala, among districts that are seeing a rise in cases, the bulletin stated.
It said 3,407 coronavirus patients have been discharged after recovering from the infection, taking the number of cured persons to 2,40,798 in the state.
There are 45 critical patients who are on ventilator support while 360 are on oxygen support, the bulletin said.
It said 63,68,902 samples have been collected for testing so far in the state.
‘Symptomatic patients reporting late at hospital’
The central team in Kapurthala found that Covid patients were reporting quite late at the hospitals despite being symptomatic, which was the key reason behind deaths in the district as per the case study done by them. The doctors shared their study report during the meeting chaired by the Punjab Health Systems managing director Tanu Kashyap with the district authorities and Dr Ashutosh Bishwas of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and Dr Sanjay Gupta of National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, New Delhi.
Kapurthala district is among the top 10 worst-hit districts when it comes to casualties with 285 deaths till Sunday. Kashyap also directed the authorities to set up a district-level vaccination cell.
